Bonded Fiber Matrix

Bonded Fiber MatrixBonded Fiber Matrix or (BFM) is a product that is designed to take the place of straw matting. While the standard paper hydroseed mulch will hold the seed in place on steep slopes there is little keeping some of the soil from moving or shifting. Bonded fiber matrix will help lock the soil into place and is very effective in the erosion control until the root system of the planted vegetation can permanently hold the soil in place.

Bonded fiber matrix is essentially wood mulch that consists of very long fibers. These fibers are long enough to inter-twine with each other creating locking pattern which holds the mulch into place. There is also a very large amount of tackifier that is added to the mulch which helps cement the mulch into place. In fact once the BFM has dried, it takes great force in order to break through it. Even though the top layer is rigid it still allows for needed moisture to penetrate, and the seed which is applied can still germinate and come up through the dense layer.

Costs less

It is roughly 50% cheaper to use BFM versus straw matting. Primarily this is due to significantly less labor that is needed for application.

Covers more effectively

BFM covers effectively every inch of surface area of the slope. It sticks on contact to all parts of the slope. This reduces what is called rilling which occurs when using straw matting. Rilling is when water runs underneath the matting and washes away the soil. This is very common when using matting.

Stays in place

BFM stays in place throughout the whole area of application. If straw matting is not anchored sufficiently the entire project can dislodge and end up at the bottom of the hill. This happens frequently especially during the spring when water runoff is heavy, or during a freak heavy rain storm. BFM is warrantied by the manufacturer to hold into place.

More environmentally friendly

BFM’s are more biodegradeable after the vegetation is established. BFM will form into the natural sod structure within the first year after of your desired vegetation is in place.

Quicker Application

BFM’s are usually a quick one day application onto your job site. While it is applied in a two stage process the amount of time used to spray on BFM is less time consuming than laying straw mat, thus reducing the chance of rain storms washing away your seed before the project is completed.

There are several brand names of Bonded Fiber Matrix. Two common brands are Soil Guard and EcoAegis. We can obtain both of these brands as well as others, according to what would work best to your specific project. The goal of any erosion control project is to establish natural vegetation as quickly as possible to that it can contain soil from eroding. That is why BFM’s make cost effective sense.
